The Naujawan Support Network is an organization of international students standing up to numerous instances of wage theft, and other violations of workers’ rights.
In June 2021 a grassroots community of international students in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond came together to fight against the broad and gross exploitation of international students by businesses, colleges, and universities across Canada.
The Naujawan [youth] Support Network, an organization of international students mostly from Punjab, India, has been standing up to wage theft and other violations of workers’ rights ever since. Through various forms of direct action NSN have recouped over $350,000 for workers and prevented the deportation of international students that were victims of fraud.
The Service Employees International Union Local 2 is intently aware of the exploitation international students face. Burdened with outrageous international tuition fees, extreme costs of living, and precarious immigration status, international students are in a uniquely vulnerable position in Canadian workplaces.
SEIU Local 2 stands in steadfast solidarity with the work of NSN, and as a gesture of our support have provided a $3,000 donation to its ongoing efforts. We applaud the courage of its members in standing up for justice for all international students and migrant workers. We echo the NSN’s belief that “… organized workers are the best defence against exploitation,” and “… real working-class power requires solidarity between workers – whether unionized or nonunionized – and oppressed communities.”
Members of SEIU and international students throughout our network are encouraged to connect with NSN chapters that are being built and developed across Canada.
